Paternity action

A paternity action is a legal procedure that enables the mother to establish the paternity of the biological father, usually to claim child support when he does not pay or does not acknowledge paternity. The child can also file a paternity action later. A successful paternity action does not grant legal parenthood but obliges the biological father to financially contribute to the upbringing and care of the child (Section 1:394 Dutch Civil Code).
