Alimony is the legal obligation of a parent or former partner to financially contribute to a child’s upbringing or ex-spouse’s support. There are two types: child support (generally payable until age 21) and spousal support (usually lasting up to 5 years, depending on your circumstances).
How is alimony calculated?
The amount is determined using official standards (“Tremanormen”) based on the needs of the child or ex-partner and the payer’s financial capacity. Income, expenses, the number of children and special circumstances are all considered. Since 2023, courts use a fixed housing budget and as of 2025, child support is calculated with updated NIBUD tables for higher household incomes.
Alimony is indexed annually on January 1st (6.5% for 2025). If your ex does not pay, Jordan Law can initiate collection through the government agency LBIO.
